Why isn’t Trump held accountable for this?

I haven’t written anything political for Medium until now. I can’t keep silent about this.

I listened to Kamala Harris’ dissection of Donald Trump during her acceptance speech at the Democrats’ convention in Chicago. You can tell she was a prosecutor the way she detailed his many failures and crimes. But what she missed—and that others do not mention either—is Trump’s greatest foreign policy mistake.

With few exceptions, his foreign policy lurched from one disaster to another. (Remember building condos in North Korea?) He left the Paris climate agreement (Biden brought us back.) He threatened to leave NATO (ditto). He cosied up to Vladimir Putin.

These were bad enough.

But the worst thing Donald Trump did in foreign policy was to withdraw for the Iran treaty, a.k.a, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, that prevented that country from pursuing nuclear weapons. Theoretically, it’s still alive. But the US is effectively out of what he called “the worst deal ever.” He replaced it with more sanctions to keep the pressure on Iran.

Besides allowing Iran to enrich more and more uranium toward bomb-quality material over the past six years, Trump also thumbed his nose at the unlikely coalition that put the deal together: our three major allies, the United…
