We see in the colors of the spectrum, VIBGYOR, because our eyes' cells send information to our brains, which is then interpreted. That interpretation then has to be verbalized, which is a linguistic convention. Those retinal cells do not see ultraviolet or infrared, so they do not seem to exist. But they do, just not in the virtual reality that our bodies produce and that our culture interprets.
