We absolutely need skepticism now. For instance, from the beginning, Copernicus had problems, not because he was going against the church, but because the math didn't seem to work out. No one knew that stars are billions of kilometers away, so the parallax didn't work. This wasn't solved until long after Copernicus and Galileo were dead.
