Tom Wolfe in his last book “The Kingdom of Speech” accused Darwin of practically plagiarizing Wallace, and opined that the aristocratic Darwin, present in London, beat out the plebeian Wallace who was slaving away in Malaysia. I think there is merit to pursuing his argument. And Wallace never thought that human intelligence was due to divine intervention; he thought that evolution needed to explain human consciousness including language, spirituality and religion before it could be complete. The atheist philosopher Thomas Nagel has made the same argument.
