Pierre Barbet published his book A Doctor at Calvary: The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ as Described by a Surgeon in 1950. Since then other physicians have considered the process of dying in this horrible way. One point that Barbet made concerned Jesus' "bloody sweat" in Gethsemane. He pointed out that this phenomenon is rare but not unknown. Its name is hematodrosis, and can occur when a person experiences intense stress. The skin becomes exquisitely sensitive, which helps explain why after the beating and scrounging Jesus endured he dies relatively quickly on the cross.
