One could say that the Church has had a profound effect on humanity as a whole: not as bad as some would insist, but on the whole more beneficial than not.
No one, no human organization, can possibly do a greater work than that which it was Jesus' to do, namely, the salvation of humanity and indeed the creation itself. But taken as a whole, the Church from time to time has done "greater works" because global not just local. And those come about when the people who form the Church at any given moment are transformed, painfully, slowly, but surely.
