Making the world dream? Haiti??
Who are you kidding?
For this last installment of articles on Haiti, I want to end my review of Jean Ricot Dormeus’ book, How Haiti Can Make the World Dream Again [Comment Haiti peut faire rêver le monde à nouveau, published by Dream Again Press, Silver Spring, Maryland, 2025.] Dormeus writes,
Despite innumerable challenges, Haiti has shown a remarkable capacity to rise up, to adapt, and to contribute signifcantly to the world community. The country has left an indelible mark upon the world, its essential role in supporting the various liberation movements of Latin America, or its unique cultural influence on the domains of literature, art, and cuisine.
He goes on to list the numerous accomplishments of this “country of artists and philosophers,” as Haitians like to refer to their land. Beyond the visual arts, literature and poetry, and music, he underlines the role Haitian philosophers have played in teaching the world to distinguish and celebrate the African influences not only in Haiti, but Africa itself, in the former colonies. Moreover, Haitian scientists have made significant advances, for instance, in diagnosing and treating HIV and AIDS. (p. 38)
These serve as reminders to Haitians especially that their country isn’t without accomplishments in many domains, and so working toward making Haiti into a nation…
