There is a time and place for protest, and I have participated in many over the years. Chant slogans, wave signs, march through the streets.
Chicago redux
“Hey, hey, LBJ, how many kids did ya kill today?” President Johnson refused to run for a second term in 1968, his presidency a casualty of the Vietnam War and the movement protesting it. The Democrats then had a chaotic convention in Chicago, with antiwar protesters clashing with the police and with delegates, as the party was trying to get behind a new candidate. The vice-president, Hubert Humphrey, ended up being the nominee. And Richard Nixon was elected president, erasing the Goldwater debacle of 1964 and sending the Republican party on a new trajectory with the “southern strategy.”
Now the Dems are back in Chicago, after another one-term president called it quits. Anti-Israel protesters will show up. Despite the vice-president’s “good vibes” that her brief campaign has evoked, what will happen? We will know soon enough (in fact, tomorrow).
