I don't think the airplane metaphor works, or rather, flies. Maybe a helicopter, with the large rotor the consumer economy (including direct production of goods and services) and the small rotor the surplus economy of producers that supply the direct producers with machinery and commodities. Money is what fuels both, but only in the right proportion of its circulation.

Helicopters are difficult to fly. So are national economies.
