Grant, there is no one Protestant Church, for starters. Second, as you point out, it was the compulsory nature of Confession that Luther rightly revolted against, especially the very heavy penances that accompanied it (unless you could pay a hefty fine...).

The Mass has a general confession as well. In my church it is also part of the liturgy. There is also provision for private (auricular) confession with a priest. It is not required however: we say "all can, some should, none must" go to confession.
