Does anyone get married anymore?

Well, yes.

I am writing for people who are thinking of marrying — or not, who are already married, or for those who counsel marrying and married people. My aim is only to provide some food for thought. It is not my intent to convince you of anything in particular concerning the hot button issues of our age, except the need we all have to do some clear, serious thinking about who we are in relation to others.

I have married three times myself, once divorced and once widowed and now by God’s grace married again and happily so. In the 39 years since I began ministry, I have counselled and married hundreds of couples. In 2016 I published a book called Made in Heaven? How God acts in marriage, which claimed to be “notes for a new theology of marriage.” It was based on 20 years of research and writing. (If you want to read it, I recommend the Kindle version…)

None of this is to claim that I am an expert on marriage! I don’t think anyone is, because marriage is such a basic part of human life, along with language, art and spirituality. Above all, marriage has to be lived, not studied (though that can’t hurt, which is the point of my writing). It is always in the making, from the day you meet to the day the marriage ends.
