As I write this, the Middle East conflict keeps growing. Iran rained down 200 ballistic missiles on Israel yesterday, most of which did not hit their target. This was in response to Israel’s extraordinary attack on Hezbollah, complete with exploding pagers, and airstrikes on Houthi facilities in Yemen.
It almost seems as if Gaza has been forgotten. The first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas assault is looming. But all over the region, people are dying daily, including seven in a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv during the missile bombardment. What horror is next?
Celebrating what?
And what will be the reaction of people outside the conflict? I was shocked after October 7 to see how many people outside the Middle East actually celebrated that attack. I can understand that many Arabs rejoiced, just as they did after 9/11. But a lot of people seem to believe that Hamas’ torturing, raping, incinerating, and murdering Jewish people was okay because the colonized were fighting back against the colonizers.
Hmmm… colonialism has justifiably a bad name. Is Israel a colony of the Western colonial powers? Forces of the United States, Britain, and France helped Israel shoot down most of the Iranian missiles. Is that proof?
