An excellent article, Jeremy, thank you. The Q hypothesis has always made me twitchy, especially when scholars like Marcus Borg discover "layers" of Q. Austin Farrer's Luke hypothesis is brilliant, as was he, but it also doesn't check all the boxes. (Farrer is one of my go-to theologians.)

I also remain attached to Ken Bailey's work on oral transmission. Illiterate societies are always better at collective ways of keeping and transmitting memories than we scribblers imagine.

In any event, and FWIW, I have moved around the timelines... Mark, John, Matthew, and finally Luke. Since Luke does say that he gathered different sources for Theophilus, that "feels" late. And it suggests that Farrer was on to something...
